Human paradox
Man is a paradoxical being. He is obviously the only being in the nature which is not simply of
nature. And he knows it. He also is able to put himself in front of it! The
nature will never study the nature, it reaches elsewhere its intelligibility. First
man has to emerge so that something like science becomes possible.
The specific human realm is properly an aberration. A contradiction
of structural logic! It’s like a typewriter abruptly put to make soap bubbles!
The expressions of a system must be in logical continuity with the structural laws
and the organization of the system. A system left to itself cannot question itself
radically. A system as system cannot be at the same time its own anti-system.
How to explain that a structure can grant its destruction because of `another'
thing than itself, as it arrives in the sacrifice of martyrdom? How to explain
that what is `between the lines' can become more important than the written
text? How to explain that `what is' can be denied for `what must be'? How to
explain that the `absent' can become more present than the `present'? How to
explain that the answer can open the question and the question of the question
ad infinitum?
Man speaks in the infinite opening. The last word can
never be known as once and for all. No word is final. Each word is begun again.
Incessantly other prospects are open for him. New possibilities request it. New words come up to face or contradict it… The human specificity would
remain unintelligible without the difference and the new challenges
of the difference. This differential animal that is man does not cease
digging in the plenitude of what is naturally given for incessantly filling
them and incessantly digging them again and again.
The
specific human being emerges in gaping. Misery and greatness of man frustrated in his simple animal
condition, exposed to create, by mediation of symbolic system, through the
word, a world always other, always new. This symbolic space, the space of
possibility and deployment of specific humanity in the rupture and the
distance, represents a real scandal within the nature. How can such an
emergence of the `not' in the middle of the large natural `yes' be explained?
The animal is undoubtedly too full with animal being to be open
to the spirit… To reach a higher order implies the immense crossing of a vacuum.
Man, does not cease to experiment with this in a thousand manners. Our gaping opening is
perverted when we refuse this authentically humanizing “poverty”.
Man is a being in great continuity with what is
naturally given. Nevertheless he becomes only really comprehensible in rupture
with it. The animal exhausts its possibilities in a symbiotic behaviour.
Man as an animal does not escape this need. But it is not locked up there.
Something in man refuses the installation inside limits. Man is an odd animal
that the animal realm does not manage to contain. The animal is made for
balance, man for the going beyond.
Out of… The animal has this extraordinary
faculty to be completely at home in nature. It lives in absolute harmony with it.
It says ‘yes’ without question and without the possibility of question, without
suspicion and without the possibility of suspicion. It lives in an absolute `inside'
without flaw. Why is man so different from all the other animals? Why can
humans only be genuine in the infinite exodus of an “out”?
The paradox of human holds basically in the “trans”.
On human reality that it affects, it confers at the same time a singular
weakness and an extraordinary capacity of survival despite the vicissitudes of
History.
